Let Freedom Ring: The Perks of Being a Freelance Writer

Happy birthday, America! Independence Day is the perfect time to celebrate the freelance lifestyle.

Ready for a stat that blew my mind? More than 53 millions Americans do freelance work, according to a survey conducted by Freelancers Union and Elance-oDesk. That’s more than a third of the U.S. workforce. Granted, not all of them make their living exclusively as freelancers, but still — that’s a lot of slackers hanging around in their pajamas playing video games.

I’m joking! Seriously now. I work with a ton of freelancers as part of my job here at ClearVoice, and no one knows better than I how industrious this group is. Freelancers work their tails off at all hours of the day and night for pain-in-the-neck clients, often powered by nothing more than caffeine and moxie and an affinity for paying the rent.

So why do they do it?

Freedom. Independence. We here at ClearVoice talk to our freelancers regularly about content projects and product features, and that’s what they tell us time and time again — they chose the freelance life for the freedom it affords. They specifically called out the ability to choose their own hours and projects as the biggest benefits of being a freelancer

Fourth of July seemed like a perfect time to celebrate the freelance lifestyle. We asked a few of our intrepid freelancers why they love freelancing, and here’s what they told us:

Freelancer Freedom
