5 Marketing Moms You Need to Follow 

In honor of Mother's Day, we talked to five amazing #marketingmoms to get their take on the joys and challenges of motherhood and the changing marketing landscape.

May is a good month. Baseball is in full swing (that’s a pun), there’s Cinco de Mayo and Memorial Day, and the long-awaited season of beaches, sunshine and lemonade starts to tease its arrival. But what makes May extra special? It’s that second Sunday of the month that celebrates one incredible woman the fierce, devoted, best-pancake-making dynamo known as Mom.

In honor of Mother’s Day, we’re profiling five multifaceted marketing moms. Let’s see what these women have to say about the joys and challenges of motherhood and the changing marketing landscape.

Hilary De Freitas 


Born and raised in Trinidad, Hilary lives with her husband and two small children, ages two-and-a-half years and eight weeks old. When she’s not enjoying the adventures of being a mom, Hilary is the CEO of Knights Business Intelligence Services, a company she founded in 2015 to run the consulting services she had been providing for the last few years. In this role, Hilary manages the online marketing space for her clients as well as her own company.

What is your favorite part of being a mom? How will you be celebrating Mother’s Day this year? 

My favorite part of being a mom is watching them discover and accomplish new things. It’s fascinating to watch their faces as they experience something new. It makes me remember that every day, I also experience new things, and I should find the joy in that.

Whatever my husband decides for Mother’s Day is what we’re doing. I know I won’t be cooking, cleaning or changing any diapers on that day!

What do you think is unique about your approach to marketing? How does being a mom influence your approach?

My background is in engineering, so I approach marketing like an engineer — very systematic. It works for me, because I’m able to apply structure to get results. I think this is unique because most people start with the creative and then try to think about the return on investment. I often start with the end result in mind and work my way back to the creative aspect.

Being a mom influences a lot of things I do. I often tell people being a mom is like being a CEO, CFO, CMO and the janitor! So I’ve learned how to delegate time between clients. I’ve also learned not to take myself too seriously and helped others realize that in their business as well.

What do you think is the most important trend in the current marketing landscape? 

The most important trend is the shift back toward marketing providing value to customers. For a long time, marketing moved away from providing value to just convincing customers to buy. There are several examples of successful marketing strategies from the 1950s that provided tons of free value to potential customers. Many companies are switching back to that model. We need to keep focused on doing that in this current landscape.

Melanie Benson Strick 


Melanie has been running Success Connections Small Business Optimizer for 15 years. As a marketer and client adviser, Melanie constructs big-picture business plans, stays informed about current marketing strategies and caters to clients through consultation and business offerings. She lives in Agoura, California, where she is stepmom to her fiance’s children, ages 14 and 17.

What is your favorite thing about working in marketing? 

Done properly, marketing is a powerful tool designed to attract your ideal clients. But there isn’t just one way to market a business, so it requires a unique ability to understand how the target audience thinks, how they make their buying decisions and what the intersection of a client’s offerings are with their target audience’s burning need. That makes marketing an organic, ever-evolving factor in a business which keeps someone like me in perpetual learning mode.

Do you think being a mom influences your approach to marketing?

I think becoming a part-time mom has made me acutely aware of what my parent clients are facing making every second count and compressing a lot of activity into the time when kids are away.

Being a part-time parent has also helped me hone my coaching skills. There aren’t many stepparent books or programs out there, so I’ve had to figure out a way to be a part of a ready-made family without becoming the wicked stepmom. I use my coaching skills to navigate with them and to support my fiance. I am curious and ask a lot of questions. I hold possibility for them even when they don’t see it for themselves. I share new frameworks of how to see the world and shine a light on their gifts, so they can access what’s true for them. I’m still figuring this all out as I go, but I have a nice bond with two teenagers. That’s saying something. Being a part-time mom makes me a better business owner, marketer and coach to my clients, for sure.


If you had one piece of advice to give to brands looking to expand their marketing efforts, what would it be?  

One of the most important and often-overlooked parts of a marketing strategy is optimizing. A very practical step is to track what is really pulling in your highest revenue-generating clients and do more of that. It’s very easy to get caught up in trying to do everything, but you’ll just end up feeling overwhelmed (and possibly broke!) Figure out what does work, and do more of that.

Stephanie Carls 


Stephanie Carls is the customer success manager at the Austin-based content firm, Rivet. At home, she is the mother of two boys, Chase, 7, and Carson, 2. Just when you thought Stephanie would be too busy for anything else, she also creates YouTube videos and maintains her own blog, My Savvy Life, on how best to integrate technology into our everyday lives.

How do you balance family life and your career? What is the most difficult part? 

It’s tough to say that there is really a “balance” when it involves family and career. Nothing ever really seems to be in balance, as it’s always a moving scale. One thing I try to work on is time management. When you manage the time that you have, more things can be done. Late nights can happen when working on a project, but if it means that I’m available for an event for one of the boys, I’ll happily do it.

What do you think is the most important trend in the current marketing landscape? 

People don’t want to hear a company toot their own horn. The mic has been given to customers. They have the best stories to share about working with a company. Their success speaks volumes, and while it might be hard letting go of the company “voice,” it’s amazing the bigger voice customers give.


If you had one piece of advice to give to brands looking to expand their marketing efforts, what would it be?  

Don’t follow trends just to hang with the cool kids. Have a full strategy that includes the reasons you are on a platform and what you want to get out of it. When expanding, you are trying to advance your opportunities, but this can only happen with a strategy in place.

Brandy Marie Johnson 


Raised in Hawaii, Brandy currently lives in Napa, California, with her husband, two-year-old son, five-year-old daughter, 11-year-old Yorkie and 12-year-old cat. With more than 10 years of marketing experience, Brandy recently started her own business as a digital marketing and branding strategist.

What is your favorite part about being a mom? How will you be celebrating Mother’s Day this year? 

My favorite part of being a mom is reliving my own childhood and experiencing things for the first time with my kids. There’s no better feeling than hearing them laugh at a movie that I loved as a kid or seeing them splash in the ocean when I take them to Hawaii. They keep me young in that way.

For Mother’s Day, I will likely do a wine tasting, followed by a spa treatment, and then a nice dinner with the family.


What is the best part about balancing motherhood with being a successful marketer? What is the most difficult part? 

The best part is being able to work remotely and still serve my clients all over the world. By doing live video calls, my clients can connect with me on a personal level without ever meeting in person. I’m grateful for the flexibility.

The most difficult part is learning to balance work and home time. My home is my workplace, so it’s important to be there for my clients, but also to set healthy boundaries and work hours.

If you had one piece of advice to give to brands looking to expand their marketing efforts, what would it be?

Definitely include live streaming, video and influencer marketing into your strategy. Platforms like Periscope and Facebook Live allow realtime engagement, and your audience will appreciate having that time with you. Interacting in this way helps you create better content and ultimately, build a brand that people trust faster than ever before.

Explore video ads and influencer marketing to position your brand in a memorable way. When considering an influencer, don’t just look at follower count engagement and the relationship they have with their followers is far more important than the number of followers.

Ashley Marie Funderburk


Ashley is a North Carolina native who is reveling in the learning experience of this fast-paced field while raising her two-year-old son, Michael. As the content marketing assistant at Optimized Assets, a digital marketing agency, Ashley writes on-site, off-site and social media content and manages all accounts and calendars. She also runs her own site, Sweet Life of Ash, about her adventures as a young working mom.

How do you approach your role in marketing? How does being a mom influence your approach?

I do a ton of research. I love to read and learn the digital marketing industry is ever-changing, so it is important to stay on top of the trends. I try to connect emotionally with readers, and being a mom helps me do this. It’s made me a stronger person and this reflects in the work I do in my career.

What is your favorite part about motherhood? About marketing? 

I love and adore every part of being a mom! Not only is it a great learning experience for me, it’s a reminder to stop and enjoy all the small things in life. It is amazing to think I brought a small human into the world, and I get to watch him grow and learn throughout his entire life.

I learn something new every day as a marketer and as a mother. Being a mom has taught me to be more patient and to not be afraid to ask questions when it comes to my child. That goes back and ties into my career, because both of these traits go hand-in-hand at home and at work.


What’s the most important trend in the current marketing landscape? 

Social media, mobile and video. There are so many opportunities with all three of these right now. Many businesses still haven’t jumped on the bandwagon, and they are missing out on a huge way to reach a new target audience. The creativity behind video can bring an emotional connection to the viewer’s experience, and therefore bring light to your message.
